Investors define the stages of a tech startup using the terms pre-seed, seed, Series A, B, etc.

Here is an alternative version for stages of a startup from a founder’s perspective:

1. Founder stage - Founders get together, shape the initial vision of the product, attract initial funding, hire the first employees. Main challenge is to hire the best talent for building the product.

2. Product stage - Initial team and vision is in place, and you start building the MVP of your product. Don’t forget that both Minimum and Viable are equally important parts in the MVP concept.

3. Product-market fit stage - You launch the product and need to find a small number of people who really ❤️ it, rather than millions of people who just like it. Loving the product is a better indicator than liking it.

4. Product-channel fit stage - You need to find the best channel for distribution. It could be app stores, search ads, outbound sales or an organic acquisition loop, and note that the channel fit comes from the nature of the product. It's useless to try channels which naturally don't fit your product.

5. Growth stage - You need to scale your annual sales from $5M to $100M. For this you also need to have set the best internal processes and work culture in place, otherwise bureaucracy and internal team frictions can slow down company growth by a lot.

Usually the first 4 stages require 4 years of hard work, and stage 5 requires another 3 years.

As startups are run by their founders, I believe the stages of startups also should be aligned with the founders’ perspectives.

AI News

1. Microsoft's Copilot AI Now Available on Mac

Microsoft has expanded its Copilot AI to Mac users. The official Copilot app is now available in the Mac App Store in the US, Canada, and the UK. However, it's important to note that the app is free for all users except those with Intel-based Macs.

Key Features:

  • Functionality: Similar to its counterparts on Windows, iOS, iPadOS, and Android, Copilot allows users to type or speak requests, generating text, images, and more.
  • Image Generation: Create logos, edit photos, design book illustrations, curate social media content, and develop storyboards for film and video projects.
  • Accessibility: Set a dedicated keyboard shortcut to trigger Copilot and opt for automatic startup upon sign-in. There's no need to create or sign into an account to use Copilot.
  • Unlimited Access: All Copilot users now have free unlimited access to features like 'Think Deeper' and 'Copilot Voice.' 'Think Deeper' provides in-depth, detailed responses, while 'Copilot Voice' enables interactive conversations with AI, offering four distinct voices to choose from.

2. Apple’s Siri Overhaul Delayed Until 2027

Apple's ambitious plan to revamp Siri into a more advanced, conversational AI assistant has encountered significant delays. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that the comprehensive overhaul is now projected for iOS 20 in 2027. Before this, an interim upgrade in iOS 18.5 is expected to introduce large language model (LLM) capabilities, though it may function separately from the existing Siri framework. Challenges such as developmental hurdles, equipment shortages, and internal departmental issues have contributed to the delays. In contrast, competitors like Amazon have made more progress with their AI assistants, highlighting Apple's need to accelerate its efforts.

3. Amazon Unveils Alexa+, an AI-Powered Personal Assistant

Amazon has introduced Alexa+, a next-generation personal assistant powered by generative AI. Alexa+ offers more natural and expansive conversations, advanced task execution across numerous services and devices, and enhanced personalization by remembering user preferences and details. It also features proactive suggestions, such as traffic alerts and personalized shopping deals. Priced at $19.99 per month, Alexa+ is complimentary for Amazon Prime members. Initially available on newer Echo Show devices in the U.S., a broader international release is planned.

Social Buzz

Altman shares his excitement about GPT-4.5, noting that it's the first AI model that truly feels like interacting with a thoughtful person. However, due to the model's large size and demand, it hasn't yet been fully launched to the Plus tier because of GPU shortages. The model is different from others, with unique intelligence and a "magic" to it, though it isn't focused on reasoning or benchmarking. Additional GPUs will be added next week to roll it out.
